The city of Fresno is located in the San Joaquin River Valley of Central California, just 184 miles southeast of San Francisco and 222 miles south of Los Angeles. Yosemite National Park is located 90 miles northeast. The word Fresno come from the term ash in Spanish, and the city’s official flag portrays an ash tree. Fresno was founded in 1872 as a station of the Central Pacific Railroad and incorporated in 1885.

The 2010 United States Census revealed that Fresno had 494,665 residents. As of 2016, Fresno is the second most populous city in the state of California and the second in Central Valley as well as the 34th most populous city in America. Fresno County is growing faster than the state of California as a whole and faster than any other county.

Fresno began its growth in the 1870s when it was chosen for Central Pacific Railroad station. The magnificent scenery and good weather attracted many immigrant farmers and ranchers, creating a melting pot of over 100 nationalities that reflects the city’s culture.

Fresno is a place where you can enjoy delicious fruits and vegetables all year round. In fact, San Joaquin Valley is often referred to as the “Great Garden of The Sun” because it is so agricultural. There are 7,500 farms in Fresno County on 19 million acres growing grapes, cotton, tomatoes, cattle, calves and turkeys. Peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots, almonds and citrus trees bloom along the Fresno County Blossom Trail.

Fresno is home for three large public parks, two within the city limits and one in the Southwest. Fresno currently serves as the economic hub of Fresno County and California’s San Joaquin Valley. Many people say that the highest quality of education in the state of California is in Clovis City, which borders the city of Fresno. Fresno State University is also located here.
